President Encourages Responsibility

On the morning of 4 September, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (“University”) launched an inauguration ceremony to welcome new students. Professor Joseph J.Y. Sung, Chairman of the Governing Board of CUHK (SZ) and Dr. Vincent H.C. Cheng, Chairman of the Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, attended the event along with other professors and experts.

President Yangsheng Xu and Honorary Professor and Nobel Prize laureate Arieh Warshel gave welcome speeches.

President Xu stressed that the meaning of university education is about how to be a person. “We come here not to be a mere good student, but to be a responsible person in society.” He said. He also called on the students to harbor a spirit of entrepreneurship so as to better fit in the city.

Professor Arieh Warshel called upon the students to be compassionate about what happens in society at large and contemplate how each of them can contribute the greater good of the community, nation and world.

More than 600 undergraduate students from the Mainland China have been accepted this year. They are from 22 provinces and cities. Their scores are impressive. The average score for science students has been elevated from 77 to 93 points above the key universities’ acceptance threshold and that for arts students from 50 to 64 points. The University’s forte can be better represented by a comment from the mother of our youngest freshman this year, “Aside from quality and potential, the University has general education courses which are instrumental in shaping my daughter’s overall wellbeing; bilingual education, outstanding teaching staff and high academic standards will contribute to her academic pursuits.”

The University has also recruited its first batch of graduate students studying finance engineering, translation and simultaneous interpreting. These students have graduated from well-known universities, for instance, Peking University, Tsinghua University, UBC, the University of Melbourne, the University of Hong Kong and National Chengchi University of Taiwan. On the other hand, the University has also invested heavily in teaching staff and research resources. All staff teaching financial engineering courses come from famous universities or industries. The courses are designed on par with global standards while combining local features. The School of Humanities and Social Science has hired translation & interpreting experts as mentors from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Mainland China.

The term commences on September 6 and the students will embark on a new journey of study and research right here at the University.
